Suppressed Grief

Can Lead to Emotional or Psychological Problems

“Every woman I have seen who has had a termination has a difficult time subsequently. They have a grief process and sorting out time to go through. It certainly doesn't leave them unmarked and I have never met a woman who has had one who would want to go through it again of her own free will.”

    — Dr CHRISTINE FORSTER, Chairwoman, NZ Abortion
    Supervisory Committee, 1994-2001
    Sunday-Star Times, 28 April 1996

Emotional and/or psychological problems can arise when women deny or suppress the natural grief that results from the loss of their aborted child, blocking the normal healing process.

Many women do not have emotional and/or psychological problems immediately after abortion — in fact, they may initially experience relief. Some women experience immediate sadness, regret, anxiety or guilt as many of the women's abortion stories on this website demonstrate.

Some women experience later psychological effects. These may not emerge until some years after the abortion. A subsequent pregnancy, or the birth of a child, may uncover unresolved grief.
