Women Claim Under-Information Disempowers

The Right to Know

Women contacting Abortion Concern consistently say that their rights were violated, and their right to choose undermined, as a result of being under-informed about abortion.

“Knowledge is power.”

These women claim that failure to provide them with adequate information secured an abortion they might not otherwise have chosen.

Rights Denied

  • The Right to Refuse
  • Failure to provide information on where to find support to continue a pregnancy can cause women to wrongly believe they cannot solicit support, or that they have “no other choice” but to abort, and is one of the most effective ways of securing abortions to which informed women might otherwise choose to refuse.

“The cruelest lies are often told in silence.”

  • The Right to Conscientious Objection
  • Withholding foetal development information denies women the right to conscienciously object to an abortion. A woman may consider abortion acceptable at, say, 6 weeks pregnancy, but not at, say, 14 weeks. The only thing that has changed is the development of the foetus. Therefore, failure to provide information about foetal development may assist in securing abortions to which informed women might otherwise conscientiously object. […More info]

  • The Right to Psychological Safety
  • Failure to provide information about possible post-abortion distress, particularly when women are at increased risk of distress following an abortion, denies women their psychological safety, and assists in securing abortions that informed women might otherwise choose to refuse.
